I have to confess that there was much internal debate regarding whether or not a site devoted to the 2D gaming scene should cover with “3D” smack dab in the beginning of its title. But alas, 3D Dot Heroes, Atlus’ upcoming PlayStation 3 throwback action game, has sold me on its retroness.

There’s a back story about an archfiend, a magic sword, and a lone hero with powers inside, but 3D Dot Heroes is all about homages to games of yesteryear. In fact, Atlus new batch of screens play up the games retroness. From the press release:

The publisher challenged members of the gaming press and public to put their gamer credentials on the line and figure out the games alluded to in this and future batches of screens from the game.

You, sirs, have been challenged. How many homages can you spot in the gallery?
