The Punch-Out!! series is one of the most beloved in videogamedom (at least stateside), so it’s a continual source of amazement that we’ve been blessed with just two proper entries: Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!!
It’s been 15 years since Super Punch-Out!! bashed its way onto the Super NES to the delight of casual digital pugilists, but Nintendo has recently dipped its strong but sensitive hand into its classic sack and whipped out Punch-Out!! for Wii.
Set for a May 18th release, Punch-Out!! sees our pint-size prize fighter Little Mac once agains squaring off against a nostalgic rogue’s gallery consisting of old timey favortites such as Piston Hondo, Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, King Hippo, and Great Tiger, as well as noobs such as Disco Kid.
To ramp up the excitement even further for a game that found its way onto several folks’ must-have lists the day the first images were released to the public, Nintendo has created a most excellent viral video campaign starring Clay “Sheeeeiiiit” Davis as Doc, and a plucky Italian-Stallion-like youth in the role of Mac, who is looking to make his big comeback.
The clip nails several familiar Punch-Out!! bits, including the classic training sequence and several sparring segments that reference O.G. boxers. And the best thing about this viral campaign is that the final product will most likely be something that brings joy for years to come, unlike a certain J. J. Abrams monster flick that dropped the ball in every way possible.
Shakey cam for 90 minutes? Dude!
