When I was just a lad of 15 years, I had to make a major choice in the fall of 1989: would I beg my mother for a SEGA Genesis or a Turbo Grafx-16 to satiate my gaming lusts that holiday season? I plundered the pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly and Video Games & Computer Entertainment for months on end in order to get the nitty-gritty on the two systems. The result? I decided to go TG-16.

Mass Effect 3 - Screenshot 3

You’ve surely, by now, heard that the ending to the Mass Effect trilogy is god-awful, illogical, and out right stupid. As someone who uses the series as an outlet for stress and anger, and has played through it eight times, it disappointed me, too. But does a bad ending make a bad game? In this case, absolutely not. Mass Effect 3 is a phenomenal game

ARG Zombies

If there’s something almost every gamer can agree upon, it’s that we have a damned good time splattering zombie. Owen Morris, game director of ARG Zombies wanted to take zombie-slaying to the next level by giving America zombies everywhere. Coming this holiday season to both the Android and iOS devices, ARG Zombies is a title that blurs the line between reality and the game world. I connected with Owen Morris (Game Director) and David O’Hagan (PR Director) to answer some questions about the upcoming title. A title that you can help get made.

Blob's really doing these grads a favor, the way the job market is today!

The main character in Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, a spiky green blob with one perpetually grumpy eye, is one of my favorite new characters in a video game. And he never utters a word. I don’t even know if he’s a he. He seems like one. Maybe the spiky patina around him could be beard stubble. I couldn’t see a female blob looking that disheveled. In any case, Blob is a, um, blob of action. Of many actions! He can absorb anything, he can grow, he can ground pound like Super Mario and even telepathically control platforms to launch himself or other things in the air and to solve simple physics puzzles. He’s multi-talented, a big grump and he’s striking out against a world that wronged him. He’s a hero. The hero the PlayStation Vita deserves. Or, uh, the villain I guess, since he eats … everything. Really.

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is a downloadable B-movie in video game form from Remedy, the guys behind the first two Max Payne titles. Trading in film noir and John Woo action for supernatural, reality-altering weirdness, American Nightmare follows the be-flanneled Alan Wake, a writer for a cheesy Twilight Zone (or Night Gallery) take-off called Night Springs and it seems he’s found himself in one of his own stories. Stuck in an Arizona town with only a flashlight and a gun (and then an arsenal of guns), he has to battle the Taken, regular people corrupted by “the darkness”, and put an end to the plans of his own dark doppelganger, who wants to take over Alan’s life and spread darkness all over the world.

Mass Effect 3

It’s finally here, everyone.. March 6th.. BWRRRAAWWHHH! That’s the sound of the Reapers coming down from above and shooting everything you ever loved and dreamed of loving with gigantic laser beams. The last two Mass Effect Collector’s Editions weren’t too impressive, but I think EA took the criticism to heart, and really outdid it with this one. Warning: THE ART BOOK SECTON HAS A FEW SPOILERS YOU MAY OR MAY NOT WANT TO SEE. I suggest you stop watching at that point if you want to remain spoiler free. If you don’t want to watch the video at all, here’s what’s included:

Hitman Absolution

The Square Enix rep played through the demo twice. The first go, he was stealthy and patient and hid the bodies of any NPCs he had killed. The second time around things got a bit more violent. To show us just how many options you have in tackling missions, he rescued a cop that was being interrogated by criminals and used a fire axe to take out three thugs. This doesn’t sound all that gruesome in text, but seeing is indeed believing.

HD, dual soundtracks, Miles “Tails” Prower… Available on Steam, PSN, XBLA and many other platforms, the downloadable version of Sonic CD is the definitive version of the game. It’s the new shining example of how to resurrect an old game for new audiences. Pick up, errrr, download this game right now. It’s a must-have for hedgehog fans.

Warning: This game isn't a sequel!

Just a quick update on Gravity Rush, the Vita game from Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama. I got to play an entire demo at Sony’s enormous booth at CES from beginning to end, instead of a mere few minutes and walked away more impressed than I was before. Not only that, it’s now confirmed to be a launch title in the U.S.
