memorex

Memorex, owned by Imation, has come to CES 2012 with a nice-sized handful of gaming accessories mostly targetting Nintendo consoles. The more interesting 3DS product was the Universal Game Selector. It attaches directly to the 3DS and allows for instantaneous game switching via a slider on the rear. The entire unit is sits on the back and holds 3 games.

SONY DSC

The X to the Z held down Monster Cable’s “Monster Game” area by bringing his passion and energy to a demo starring the company’s gaming-centric cans, the Monster Game T1. Featuring 40mm drives, noise-isolating ear cups, and a sexy LED “Light Drive System” that gives it Tron-like appeal, the $349 gaming headset packs a wallop both in terms of audio and visual aesthetic.

CES 2012

The 2012 Consumer Electronics Show kicks off in a matter of days, bringing the collective technology world to Las Vegas for a week of nerditry that no other show can duplicate. Although the product showcases held at the Las Vegas Convention Center and adjacent hotels lean heavily toward laptops, TVs, headphones, and other assorted tech toys, there will a small (but satisfying!) amount of gaming wares on display. Gaming wares that you need to know about. Here is what you can expect.

Oliver Stone and Michael Mann play Kinect Sports

Venturing to Vegas during the Consumer Electronics Show guarantees that you’ll see something that will leave a deep impression. Typically, this entails a piece of forward-thinking technology that excites, or a celebrity endorsing a product of dubious quality. CES 2011 was no different, but this time around what caught our eyes weren’t the numerous tablets on display or MTV darlings, but two of America’s finest visual storytellers: Oliver Stone and Michael Mann.

Old school Natan “Rad” Spencer may not be Capcom’s Bionic Commando representative in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but he’s returning to action gaming with Bionic Commando Rearmed 2. This sequel to 2008′s well-received Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 sees developer FatShark handling the programming duties in place of the now-defunct GRIN. With the behind the scenes change comes gameplay changes that are highlighted by the optional jump button (which can be toggled on or off). The move’s inclusion, thankfully, doesn’t break the game. Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 relies on arm-swinging action and, in fact, the game can be completed without jumping at all.

Okamiden logo

At the same press suite I played MvC3, I got my hands on the debug version of Okamiden, where I warped to the middle of the game via a Windows DOS-like menu. The PR rep on hand had me play a story-specific mini-game, similar to FFVII‘s snowboarding or motorcycle segments, which had me flying Chibiterasu and companion through a windy storm. Every couple of seconds a gust of powerful wind would blow, sending Chibi flying off the screen to Game Over Land. Once that happens, you’re sent back to the beginning. The only way to bypass the wind is to switch in paintbrush mode, use the stylus to draw a lower-case cursive “L” on Chibi, and hope for the best. If the wind comes from behind or from the front (I couldn’t tell), draw a swirl (like the Dreamcast logo).

Fling1

It was only a matter of time before someone came up with an iPad controller. The Fling is the brainchild of Ten One Design studio, and while it looks like a suction cup control pad it’s more than that. Fling is a patent pending transparent spiral, flexible enough to stay out of your way and sturdy enough to provide a proper controller feel. Since it’s transparent you won’t miss one minute of gaming action, and since it’s attached by suction cups, it’s easy to use when the mood strikes. It won’t ruin your screen, that’s for sure.
