A portion of the city’s subway system is now adorned with 8-bit art inspired by Pac-Man and Super Mario Bros. As such, you can find clouds, mushrooms, pipes, ghosts, ladders, and other elements from old school games. Bit Rebels has several shots of the retro-themed tile art that is worth a gander if you’re a fan of ol’ school visuals.
New York Comic Con 2011 is under way, once again transforming the Jacob Javits Center into a weekend nerdvana. As always, the show embraces several aspects of geek culture: gaming, cosplay, anime, figure collecting, animation, sci-fi, and of course, comics. There’s a lot to see; frankly, a New York Comic Con attendee will miss something. That’s where we come in, kind nerds. We’re chronicling New York Comic Con 2011 with photos. Here you’ll find the killer booths, killer booth babes, killer cosplay, and other show floor merriment. Return here often during the course of the show to check out new photos.
Alyssa, the cosplayer who sent whispers through the halls of the Jacob Javits Center (and prompted many a messageboard, Twitter, and Facebook query) is making her grand reappearance at New York City’s geekiest of geekfests. 2D-X interviewed the Mortal Kombat fan last year, so we thought it only appropriate to check in on her plans for this year’s show.
Techland and Deep Silver’s zombie-slayer Dead Island was released just a few weeks ago and is already considered a worldwide phenomenon (despite some serious bugs). Banking on that, Lionsgate Motion Pictures Group wants to turn the game into a movie. The upcoming Dead Island film sounds like something that a lot of fans and movie buffs may enjoy.
Retro gaming fans recently celebrated (lamented?) 9/9, which was the launch date of the groundbreaking and much beloved Dreamcast in 1999 . The system may have died prematurely, but Germany-based Redspotgames is adding to its legacy with a new game release: Sturmwind. The region-free shmup, on paper, looks nicely stacked. Check the features:
Street Fighter X Tekken is a whiles away, but I already know that my first team is going to be Bob and Sagat. While crossover games are fun, why not take it back to a happy time with a game that delivers some family togetherness and hard hitting issues–as well as some hard hitting brawls? Full: House Tournament Fighter lets you do just that. Heavily inspired by Street Fighter II, this 2D fighter lets digital pugilists duke it out in San Francisco with Uncle Jesse, Joey, and the rest of the cast. Including America’s Funniest Home Dad, Bob Saget (Get it now?).
Angry Birds is a worldwide phenomenon. Moving from Android and iOS devices to Google+ Games and beyond, people just can’t seem to get enough of hurling feathered creatures at swine. But what if there was a way to bring Angry Birds into the really real world? China has paved the way. A temporary Angry Birds theme park has opened up in China as part of the Window of the World amusement park. The attraction was built as a part of a month-long stress reduction festival. Just as in the game, players use a catapult and launch their choice of bird to a structure containing those dastardly pigs–this time with a view of a scaled down Mount Rushmore.
It’s an extremely rare occurrence to find a made-for-internet video that’s simultaneously celebratory and touching, but that’s exactly what Google churned out with it’s latest Google Doodle that celebrates what would’ve been Queen frontman Freddie Mercury’s 65th birthday.
Wreck-It Ralph, can be summed up as Tron-meets-Rampage. The main character, Ralph, who’s voiced by John C. Reilly, is much like the villain from Rampage. He’s always breaking things, while a small little fellow named Fix it Felix Jr. (voiced by Jack McBrayer) is always there to save the day and fix everything that Ralph damages. Going back to his dumpster with his tree trunk, Ralph wishes he weren’t like this, and for a happier life.
