Netflix plans on tightening its grasp on the home entertainment industry by providing subscribers with access to video game rentals (under the Qwikster banner), putting the company in direct competition with Gamefly.

Yesterday, Netflix was a movie and TV show delivery service. Today, it’s also a video game delivery service.

If you haven’t been keeping up with Netflix’s recent dealings, the company has split its streaming service and mail-in-DVD service. Netflix will handle internet movie streaming, while the newly formed Qwikster will handle the snail mail service and, according the Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, video game rentals.

This might be beneficial to Qwikster as many customers were confused and angry about the recent Netflix price restructuring. But with no pricing details and no official number regarding exactly how many copies of games Qwikster will have on hand (or even what consoles it will support it) this new division may face a rough transition. Qwikster’s main competitor Gamefly supports every current gen console and older generations including the GameBoy Advance, with over 7,000 titles to choose from. Gamers can also keep their Gamefly rentals for $39.99 another benefit from having the service.

This raises an important question: Will Qwikster be able to provide customers with DVD, Blu-ray, and video game rentals for a flat, sub-$20 fee?

A little while ago Atlus put up a teaser website that everyone knew would be related to Persona 4 given its black text and black yellow background, just like the logo of the popular 2008 PlayStation 2 RPG. And wouldn’t you know it, this week’s Famitsu magazine revealed an enhanced port of Persona 4 for the PlayStation Vita, as well as a Persona fighting game by the BlazBlue team and a few words on Persona 5.

The Persona 4 Vita port, titled Persona 4: The Golden, will include a new character named Marie, new event scenes with new animation, a new opening intro with new music, additional voice acting, and most interestingly, a new a feature that uses the Vita’s communication capabilities to request help during the game’s dungeons. Without going into details Famitsu also revealed other improvements that have been requested by players will be included.

Persona 4: The Golden will come out spring 2012 in Japan. Hopefully a U.S. release will follow suit. I’ve been holding off on playing it on PS2 for a while in case a portable version was released. Procrastination pays off!

The unexpected announcement is the Persona fighting game from Arc System Works, the talented team behind BlazBlue and Hard Corps Uprising. Apparently, it takes place two months after Persona 4 with bizzaro mascot character Teddie hosting a fighting tournament that will also invite Persona 3 characters like blonde bombshell Aegis into the fray. Other confirmed brawlers include Chie, Yosuke and the P4 protagonist. True to tradition, Shoji Meguro will handle music while Katsura Hashino directs.

It will see release in Japanese arcades in spring 2012 with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 ports to follow in summer 2012 in Japan. Considerin’ how much we love the fightin’ here, we better see it here, too!

Atlus also reassured via Famitsu magazine that Persona 5 is indeed on its way with the usual team on board. Katsura Hashino will return to direct, Shoji Meguro to compose, and Shigenori Soejima to character design. No further details unfortunately. But with an enhanced port of Persona 4 for PlayStation Vita, a Persona fighting game, and a Persona 4 anime all around the corner, can you reaaaally complain?

Hideo Kojima may just be trolling us all (after all, this is the guy who made Metal Gear Solid 2), or making a huge announcement that Zone of Enders fans are longing to hear.

Kojima tweeted a picture of what appears an Orbital Frame from Zone of the Enders. What makes this revelation more shocking, is that the new Z.O.E. which may be a sequel (implied by the 3) or could simply land on the Nintendo 3DS. This is huge news for the 3DS in light of recent struggles.

Z.O.E. was overlooked by many gamers when it first arrived on the PS2 back in 2001. It was actually a really good game, which featured lightning fast mechs, an interesting plot, and easily the best graphics on the PS2 at the time. Not all was great; a shoddy translation and repetitive enemy types hampered the game. Plus, the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo disc that came packaged in with the game overshadowed it. Yet it was successful enough to spawn a sequel, which improved everything that was great about the game and addressed all the problems that plagued the original.

Z.O.E. will see a revival with the release of the HD collection in 2012. The HD collection will feature both the first game and the sequel, and will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360. This is a great move to introduce gamers to a title that they might have missed, and set the stage for the possible 3DS sequel.

As of right now Z.O.E. 3DS is just a rumor, with no word on a release dat or an official announcement. We will have our eyes peeled for any developments that come out of Gamescom later this week.

Google recently added games to its newest project, Google+, but social media giant Facebook is not one to be outdone by the newcomer to the space. As such, Facebook just revamped its own social games to battle against the upcoming Google tyrant.

The new update, which is a shock to no one who uses the site regularly, is part of some great timing on Facebook’s part. The enhancement is designed to make the games easier to follow and play (or just hide if games so choose). The changes include:

Dedicated real-time feed for game updates

Full-screen modes for certain games

More control in limiting when, where, and how often game updates appear

“Most Used Apps” bookmarks in the upper-right corner of your window

Including added new features that limit game notifications from the more popularly used games like Farmville.

Chances are that Facebook would ‘ve anyway; constant updates are something that has plagued many Facebook followers, but now it seems as though the social network is prepped for battle against Google+.

Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online leads Sony's PSN Play promotion.

Microsoft has received plenty of praise for its Summer of Arcade series, and rightfully so; it’s produced such gems as Limbo and Bastion. Sony, however, hasn’t thrown in the towel just yet and plans to rival Microsoft’s promotion with “Playstation Network Play.”

PlayStation Network Play, when it kicks off in a few weeks, will be an annual event that allows people to pre-order games before they ‘re released (and through the pre-order, receive a free piece of DLC). If you’re a true early adopter and pre-order at least five days before a game’s release, you’ll score a free theme. Gamers who buy all four games will get a free copy of Payday: The Heist and as an added incentive, Playstation Plus subscribers will get 20% discount on all the games featured in the promotion. What are these wonderful games (priced at $14.99 a piece), you ask?

Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition is first up on August 23rd. Pre-ordering the game unlocks Gill on day one instead of blistering your thumbs beating the game with every character.

DeathSpank: The Baconing is set for release on August 30th. Pre-ordering the game unlocks Roesha as a co-op character.

September will see the release of the last two games, Bloodrayne: Betrayal on the 6th and Renegade Ops on the 13th. Bloodrayne’s pre-order comes with a static theme, while the game itself has a dynamic theme and Playstation Home avatar. Renegade Ops pre-orders will include a free vehicle and DLC character pack.

Pre-orders begin this Tuesday, August 9th allowing players to get the free themes that are available. Don’t forget though, if you want to get Payday: The Heist for free on September 20th, you MUST buy all four games.

Here’s hoping that Playstation Network Play will do for Playstation what Summer of Arcade did for the Xbox 360.

New video game talk show Vs. Mode: Two Can Play pits two of the gaming industry’s top designers, developers and executives together in heated debate. The series pilot, “Video Game History: The Past, Present and Future of Play” stars Ultima creator Richard Garriott and Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin, who argue just how far gaming has come, and has yet to go. It offers a fascinating perspective on just how much the art and business of game design has changed over the last four decades, from the days of 5 ¼ inch floppy disks and Apple II computers to today’s wonderful world of social games, iPhone apps, free to play online outings, and digital distribution.
