I’m obsessed with time travel; anyone who knows me well has heard me expound upon the various working theories that would possibly allow matter to move forward and backward through the temporal planes. I love Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future. I find Michael Moorcock’s Behold the Man quite intriguing, even though some elements are a bit squishy. I even stomached The Butterfly Effect. The inner psychologist tells me that it’s representative of my longing to control a cruel, unpredictable world, but since my inner psychologist never had any formal training I don’t listen to him much.
The concept of manipulating time has been explored in titles such as Chrono Trigger, but EnjoyUp Game’s Chronos Twins DX looks to do things a bit differently. Instead of certain choices redirecting the storyline/timeline, Chronos Twins DX lets players work in more than one timeline simultaneously.
Backstory: You control Nec, a spunky dude who is racing against time to save not only the world from a mysterious alien entity, but avenge the death of his brother. In order to best the challenges presented in each level, and tackle the enemy when it first arrives on your homeworld, you use the dual-screen layout to play across the past and present. For example, solving a puzzle in the past, will allow you to make headway through the present. There’s also a SPLIT device that pauses time, which I assume gives you more of an opportunity to execute the task at hand.
All in all, Chronos Twins DX has a groovy premise, but we’ll have to see if it’s executed well. This Wii Ware game’s release date has yet to be announced, but the cynic in me wonders if not having a set time is simply part of the gimmick.
