DreamcastConsole Virtual Vox Pop: Should SEGA return to hardware?

Virtual Vox Pop is a weekly open mic in which we ask you, the reader, to sound off on a particular topic. This week, it’s Dreamcast 2 speculation.

Ever since the pre-mature death of the legendary Dreamcast, hardcore SEGA fanboys have held on to a small, minute, glimmer of hope that the company would shift from being a third-party developer for Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony and return to making its own hardware. The passion and love has even gone so far that some delusional types believe that Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 may be the first title for what may very well be the Dreamcast 2.

Crazed fandom aside, there have been strong arguments from both sides of the Dreamcast 2 debate. Supporters claim that SEGA can fill an empty niche by creating a casual-hardcore system; one similar to the Nintendo Wii that has a low cost of proudction and features fun titles that makes the most of the relatively meager power (except it would be filled with more House of the Dead titles than work out “games”). Detractors stand firm that the money to once again jump into the hardware game (and create an online component) would place SEGA in financial jeopardy.

So what’s your view: should SEGA return to hardware with a Dreamcast follow up?

Now you know my thoughts and my stance is still the same: Sega needs to consider a console that could compete with Nintendo. Let Sony and Microsoft duke it out while Nintendo wallops them both. Sega could step in and with their innovative 1st party software they could gain some ground back in the console market.

    I believe in Sega.

There is a lot of loyal Sega fans out there, including me. I respect them as much as I respect Sega. I want to relieve September 9, 1999 : To what was the greatest day in gaming to me. It wasn’t just about having that Dreamcast a few days before my birthday, It was more about a system that was my Dad’s last system he bought for me before he died. I’ll admit the man, knew what was the best. He bought me my very first Sega Genesis and I’ve loved Sega ever since that day. Though it’s sad that some of the greatest things become nothing more than a part of your past. :/
Back then It was just about playing a video game, I never thought Sega would fumble because they we’re the best at the time to me.

It’s been a least 10 years but I haven’t forgotten that X-box helped screwed Sega in the end. I do however see Sega returning soon, it’s kinda ironic that they’ve patent controllers, a network sever for home use, and a lot of other things recently. Also Seeing Simon Jeffery step down at SOA, a while after he made remarks about there “being no dreamcast 2, or that Sega doesn’t plan on getting back in the hardware business” , then releasing RINGEDGE, RINGWIDE hardware is a bit random right?

On sonicthehedgehog4.com it states that Sonic 4 is coming to a forth platform. Many will argue that it’s a iphone because someone photoshoped it and clamed it to be leaked. lol
Please, that’s not something worth of being a secret, and neither is a pc because that rumor would of been debugged by now.
Yet no one knows what it is….
Kinda like when something comes out when you didn’t expect it…..
“like when the Ipod came out” lol

Imagine this news in almost every gaming website:
“SEGA RETURNS TO THE CONSOLE MARKET”
it’s a matter of time before this happens.

There is room, I think Sega sees that if they create a affordable console in which is easy to program and cuts production cost for games down they could get that niche it the gaming industry. Sega has being creating controversy for the last year and now there just adding to the fire with Sonic 4 and it’s confusing website.

I think there’s been enough distance between SEGA’s post-Genesis fumbles and the present for fans to embrace to company once again. It seems like SEGA, finally, is thinking like a console maker again with a load of killer titles for 2010.

If SEGA dropped a console next month, it would be a day one purchase. Something I rarely, rarely do. But I doubt that the Dreamcast 2 will be launched with Sonic 4–something, anything, wouldve been leaked by now. You know how the gadget/electronics nerd s love to comb the FCC’s site lol

I have to say that I love my Xbox 360! I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a Dreamcast 2 or whatever they call it! I just love SEGA and the quality of their hardware. Tokyo Extreme Racer was my favorite game on Dreamcast! So come on SEGA and make many of your fan’s dreams come true. You can bet your butts that they learned from their mistakes with Dreamcast!(Which was my all time favorite gaming system!) I would absolutely love to see a new SEGA system!

It would be fantastic to SEGA bring out a new gaming console. It really has not been the same since the Dreamcast days.
