New 2D X Excellence Award How To: Record PS3 and Xbox 360 gameplay with the Elgato Game Capture HDIf you’re looking to record a Let’s Play, speed run, or other video game related video, there are many tools available to let you do just that. Previously, we’ve taken a look at the Hauppauge HD PVR, a solid video game footage capture device. We dug it, but we’ve come across another video game recorder that is our new favorite: Elgato Game Capture HD How To: Record PS3 and Xbox 360 gameplay with the Elgato Game Capture HD.

The Elgato Game Capture HD is a small (4.3 x 2.9 x 1.0 -inch) and lightweight (5 oz) portable device that records video game footage to your computer’s hard drive in glorious 1080p. In fact, Features Editor Gabriel Zamora used it to record his Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance demo footage in slick 720p.

Included in the box is the Elgato Game Capture HD, HDMI cable, USB cable, PlayStation 3 cable, and component adapter. What you’ll need: a 2-GHz dual-core Mac running at least OS X 10.7, or a 2-GHz dual-core PC running Windows 7. The machines should have 4GB of RAM.

Here’s how to record PS3 and Xbox 360 video gameplay with the Elgato Game Capture HD.


PS3
1. Connect your PS3 to the Elgato Game Capture HD using the supplied PlayStation 3 cable.

2. Connect your TV to the Elgato Game Capture HD using the supplied HDMI cable.

3. Connect the Elgato Game Capture HD to your Mac or PC using the supplied USB cable.

4. Press and hold the PS3′s power for 5-10 seconds until you hear a second beep. This resets the display settings.

5. On your PS33, navigate to Settings > Display Settings > Video Output Settings.

6. Select Component / D-Terminal and press X or the Right button to continue. Confirm your selection by pressing the X button and choosing “Yes” on the subsequent screen.

7. Enable 720p. 1080i and/or 1080p output. Press the Right button to continue and select “Yes” on the following screen. Press X to save your settings and select “Finish.”

8. Visit http://www.gamecapture.com/download to download the latest Elgato Game Capture HD software. Once downloaded, launch the Elgato Game Capture HD software.

9. Switch the Elgato Video Capture HD’s output setting to Component.

Xbox 360
1. Connect your console of choice to the Elgato Game Capture HD using the supplied HDMI cable.

2. Connect your TV or monitor to the Elgato Game Capture HD’s “HMDI Out” port using the Xbox 360′s HDMI cable.

3. Connect the Elgato Game Capture HD to your Mac or PC using the supplied USB cable.

4. Point your Mac or PC’s browser toward http://www.gamecapture.com download to download the latest Game Capture HD Software. This not only lets you record footage, but livestream, record live commentary, edit video, upload clips to YouTube.

5. Click the big, red record button to capture video in the H.264 format.

That’s it! Showcasing your pwnage is remarkably simple with the Elgato Game Capture HD. The video editing isn’t as robust as, say, iMovie, but it’ll do in a pinch. It also has livestream capabilities via TwitchTV. Overall, Elgato Game Capture HD comes highly recommended.
