I can’t front: When the news first broke that a fighter entitled Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes was being developed, I cried “poppycock” and “shenanigans” (in that precise order). Then as I studied the screens and realized that it was indeed a legit title (or the sprite work of a helluva MUGEN contributor), I began to believe – - believe that it would never see the light of day in the United States. As much as I’d like to think otherwise, there are occasions when I’m flat out wrong.
You see, just days ago, an image that was touted to be a scan from an upcoming issue of Nintendo Power made its way through the webbernets that carried the same message. Today it was confirmed that yes-indeedy Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is heading stateside, thanks to the smooth gents at ladies over at Capcom Unity. No other official information has been released except the official tag line is now the very cheesy “Ultimate All-Stars”, and that more deets will be unraveled as we move closer to E3. So, basically, it was an announcement of an announcement. With this post announcing that announcement. Meta!
For those not in the know, the fighter includes combatants from Capcom’s rough-and-tumble universe (such as Mega Man, Ryu, Chun Li) and those from the Tatsunoko Pro animation studio (like Ken the Eagle, Tekkaman, Karas). Outside of crazed otaku, many Americans may not recognize the Tatsunoko cast of characters, but I reckon Capcom is willing to risk the port thanks to the renewed interest in fighters that came with the Street Fighter IV.
Still, I have to wonder: Where’s the Super Dimension Fortress Macross representative? Has the Big West/Harmony Gold/Tatsunoko Pro legal battles and catfights prevented a Hikaru/Roy/Max appearance? Play nice, boys.
