Irem’s R-Type is without a doubt a shmup/shooter classic with its plodding, strategic gameplay, tough-as-nails challenge, huge bosses, and unique graphical style that seems to make even the most mechanical enemies appear semi-organic. Despite the number of sequels that have appeared since the series’ debut in 1987 (such as R-Type Delta and R-Type Final), it’s the original that stays with me as it was the first PC Engine game that I ever read about, courtesy of an early EGM article.
But I’m not the only one that has a strong bond with R-Type. Offworld columnist Jim Rossignol dug up a remarkable piece of model building – - a Japanese garage kit of the breathtaking and memorable third stage boss. You know, the huge space fortress that is several screens wide and packs multiple gun torrents. For the sake of scale and completion, a mini version of the R-Type is built next to it. Awesomeness all around.
I recommend an Image Fight II model next, as that’s the only way I’ll turn my attentions to that shooter again. Brutalize me, it did.
