Square Enix talks Final Fantasy VII remake, Kingdom Hearts III, and Versus XIII

edit2 231x300 Square Enix talks Final Fantasy VII remake, Kingdom Hearts III, and Versus XIII

Where is Kingdom Hearts III? Where the heck is Versus XIII? And why haven’t we seen a Final Fantasy VII remake? Those were the three questions that I asked nearly every Square Enix representative that was present during our CES 2012 briefing. They wanted to remain anonymous for very specific reasons…but they spoke. Some answers you may like. Others you most definitely will not. But there were answers.

The Skinny on Kingdom Hearts III
As a gamer who grew up with Kingdom Hearts, I’ve been waiting for an official third entry since high school. And I’m talking sophomore year. The series tugged on the ol’ heartstrings, and featured an ending that left us wanting more. So where is Kingdom Hearts III?

It’s coming. And from the same team that’s developing Versus XIII.

Kingdom Hearts III will happen,” said an anonymous Square Enix developer. “It may be several years from now, but it’s going to happen. Once we finish Versus XIII and rest from that, we will start on Kingdom Hearts III.”

I responded with a laugh and quipped “so six years, right?”

I received laughs in return and, “yes, most likely.”

The Skinny on Final Fantasy Versus XIII
Yes, it’s coming. When? Not sure.

When rumors of a Japan-only release spread across the Web, many fans became skeptical. Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been in the works for several years–E3 2006, if you want to get technical. However, not much more information was given when inquired about the much-awaited title.

“It’s definitely coming, not to worry,” said a member of the testing team, “I get e-mails about it every now and then that definitely tells me it’s coming to America. It might be a few years, but it’ll be worth the wait.”

The Skinny on a Possible Final Fantasy VII Remake
This is the question that Square Enix dodged with the grace of a matador. Not a single person from the team gave an official answer about the likelihood a Final Fantasy VII remake so, instead, I asked for their honest opinions on how they’d personally feel about remaking the beloved game.

“I’m on the fence about it,” said a developer who wanted to keep a low profile. “I’d love to see it, but at the same time I wouldn’t. It wouldn’t be the same, and wouldn’t have the same magic. It’d have voices, and what about the cross dressing part? And what about Aerith’s death? Would we see that in full next-gen graphics? I don’t think I could handle that.”

“I honestly don’t believe that people truly understand Final Fantasy VII. I think if they went back and played it today, they wouldn’t appreciate it nearly as much as they did before,” said another dev. “That might not be the case for all Final Fantasy VII fans, but I think a lot of people need to let it go and accept it for what it is.”

The Wrap
It was comforting hearing that Versus XIII is still coming down the pipe, and that Kingdom Hearts III will follow. Eventually. It’s been a long time coming, but let’s hope that Square Enix uses the opportunity to perfect and polish these titles into games that its base will enjoy (another FF XIII we do not need). As for the Final Fantasy VII remake that the masses demand…don’t hold your breath, friends. Looks like it may not happen anytime soon.

    You guys should ask then on news about FFX remake to see what will actually be done and a ETA release date.

      Why would FFX need a remake?

    youre such a liar lol, english sayings like being “on the fence about it” would make no sense to japanese developers

    • Anonymous January 17, 2012 at 8:27 PM - Reply

      So being Japanese now means that you can’t understand the concept of sitting on a fence, a point from which you could jump to either side and then need to climb the fence again to get to the other side?  Um, yeah.

      Just like how when a Japanese person bows and says “Arigato”, the immense cultural divide between Japan and the rest of the world would mean no one, anywhere, ever, would understand that gesture and phrase, except a true Japanese person.

    Six years for KHIII? Don’t even ask that, because until then there would probably more spin-off titles and KHIII could possibly ended up for a newer console.

    All of the FF titles released after 8 were just *crap*. They need to develop a *real* story and go from there. How hard can that be, honestly?

      • Rx12 February 4, 2012 at 5:35 AM - Reply

        agreed on X but 13 was too short and easily completed final fantasy needs to be a challenge with many side quests hopefully they’ve redeemed themselves from 13 with 13-2 i will get the change to find out tomorrow. final fantasy started going downhill since 11 for pc and 360. but personally a remastered final fantasy VII with its original story materia system and magics and maybe add some new side quests in but the key item to a remake would be to keep the original story and battle system because if they changed that they would rapidly lose fans world wide.

      Final Fantasy 13 was a terrible game, all across the board. Horrible storyline, incredibly annoying characters, stupid and completely different battle mechanic, linear gameplay, horrible end game, absurdly difficult and annoying grinding to get final weapons. The Final Fantasy games haven’t been good since 10.

  10. Helmeto January 31, 2012 at 10:04 AM - Reply

    Square Enix will fall due to their unwillingness to listen to fans. I used to be a Huge fan and supporter but all the games they make now seem to be absolute crap. I seriously believe if they do not listen to their fan base, which is vastly vocal, that their true final fantasy will come soon and all will be a memory of what was good.

    Square enix is nothing but a shell of what it used to be.. I bet when the company goes bankrupt playstation will buy your failure as a company and release it themselves.

  12. Deavin Carpenter February 2, 2012 at 6:08 AM - Reply

    i think squar enix nnes to stop trying to go all out with the new way of doing things and make a game their way like the old way except with amazing graphics i mena the only reason 7 is such a big concern is probably the turn based they really dont wanna be murdered over a new style of game play that theyve showed since 12. do u guys really want ff7 to have 13s graphic appeal and a different combat system plain and simple fans are too picky and would force square enix into bankruptcy either way. doing ff7 is possible pleasing the fans which is us is impossible so sorry to burst your bubble but its because of ass hole fans that will not be pleased about just 1 difference that would cause drama its like them making a live action movie of the game and it sucking as much as eragon look at their side they are backed into a corner and no good will come out of them remaking the game deal with it. i want a remake too but unfortunatley if 1 thing is different from the original and there will be there will be chaos!!!!!

    • Helmeto February 4, 2012 at 8:37 AM - Reply

      I think I speak for most people out there when I say “We don’t want to change the combat system or mechanical structure of the game!”  And I don’t think the turn based system is a concern at all…if anything it is a classic element that square has lost sight of.  And if they go through with a remake, they shouldn’t really mess with much of anything outside graphics.  Why the hell would you try to fix which isn’t broken??  Add voice overs if you want, but don’t mess with the battle system or try to make the game more like FF13.  That would be a disaster.

      I hate it when people try to say fans would put Square-Enix out of business if they remade FF7…as if it were too risky of a project for Square-Enix to undertake…on the contrary my friends, for it is too risky of a project for Square-Enix NOT to undertake!

    Just want a remake of 7 that would look good on a Hi-Def tv – that’s it. Maybe add in an extra dungeon or two.

    If they ever do remake it, they’ll most likely find a way to ruin it the same way Lucas ruined his original star war trilogy.

    I found this source pertaining to a possible FF7 HD 3D remake:

    Once you read it, you realize their reasons are piss poor…Furthermore, they would make so much damn money off a FF7 HD 3D remake that it wouldn’t matter if they put in 10 years to make it.  Look at Blizzard.  That is a company that isn’t afraid to take their time in creating master peices…sure there games take 5-10 years to make at times but the result is all so worth it and their sales back that up!  Square-Enix seems to be taking the shortcut and looking for nothing more than an easy way to earn a dollar!  Get a backbone or get lost Square-Enix!

    • Tim February 7, 2012 at 4:12 AM - Reply

      You forgot the “it will cost too much” part. Blizzard can afford to take all the time they want. Square cannot.

      • Helmeto February 7, 2012 at 7:45 AM - Reply

        So your basically saying they don’t have the resources for a Final Fantasy 7 Remake?  If not, please clarify because I am confused by your comment.

    How can they deny a reamake of Final Fantasy vii?! I’ve had high hopes for it coming out since it’s my favorite series in the Final Fantasy series. If they don’t make it I can’t hope for anything, but i would like to have a Final Fantasy game, for the main consoles, be one that takes time in the earlier times like with Final Fantsy Tactics. I’m tired of the future; I wanna see some of the past.

    know what. i been a square enix  fan as long as i can. remember from the damn games they have been coming out with. there not going to be around much longer. a final fantasy 7 remakes the only thing i think will safe them. i mean come on they made 2 mmorpgs that did not take long to die out. they would take the risk of making 2 mmos even though the first bombed. BUT! they wont remake the game that made them so famous in the first place?

    It’s sad to hear things like this. Final Fantasy 7 was by far the best rpg yet. Having a remake is precisely what they need. If they focused on remaking Final Fantasy 7, instead of pedalling out crap like Final Fantasy ,XI through XIII-2 there wouldnt be as many complaints. I’m a die hard FF franchise fan, played everyone of them. Heck I even go to the concerts. But I must say, Sqaure Enix is losing me. If I see another crappy Final Fantasy game, instead of appealing to the mast majority of the gaming population, I’m quitting Square Enix. It’s the simple rule of supply and demand. Companies are suppose to supply the demands of the customers, or they fail. Think about that Square Enix.

    the thing is not about understanding or letting it go or not! FF7 is a great story, one of the best ever, and a remake wouldn’t do bad. wouldn’t be ONLY about making a remake, but creating a game out of a great story. for fans like me, that’d be great the same music, and the same playthrough with better graphics… but i know what they mean. just doing it for its sake would be pointless…
    however, getting the same story, making a great new rpg game from it, with few irrelevant (for the story) changes, would catch a lot of new players. my kids, both 8 years old, have just discovered FF7. i got a ps1 emulator in order for them to play this particular game, and they’re loving it.
    Cause FF7 is one of those classics that never die. Since we have several remakes and re-readings of classics, from literature like Shakespeare, or even games, like Super Mario, i say that FF7 truly deserves a remake…

    i agree with rx12 those of us that are true fans of seven dont want anything to change but graphic representation sure the original version did it justice but think of the people that didnt wanna play it then i have like 4 friends that havent played any of the other games until 13 and 13-2 two came out because there graphic nuts it has to look good the rest of us dont care we would love that game if it was 8-bit i grew up on that game and it will never lose its magic i have beat that game over 500 times i cherish that game more then an xbox 360 or a ps3 or anything else you can throw at me i have four playstations just in cause one breaks ill never give that game not as long as i live and i promise you there are a million other people out there like me

    The cross dressing scene? That’s their excuse? Games include far worse taboo content than that these days. I think it would be hilarious comic relief and I can already see Cloud’s “>___< The s*** I do" expression. Even if the game becomes rated M if Aeris death scene is too graphic, that would still work because the majority of the FF7 fan base has grown up.
    If Square Enix never remakes FF7, it would be a fail. They might as well be burning piles upon piles of money.

    ok they need to get better final fantasy’s or fantasys or fantasies out the series was at its peak when ffx came out i played all the games so far and the ones after 10 were crap (x-2 not really needed just added more backstory to characters we don’t really care about the game should have been more about yuna,rikku and tidus(tye-dus not tee-dus god does that piss me off);
     ff12 fun but unlikeable characters cept for basche and balthier. vaan is the character that everyone did not like with his painted on abs and thinks he is so awesome attitude;
     ff11 is a game that looked cool but by the time i found a store that had a broadband adapter the game can’t go online anymore;
    ff13 tryed to like it but again the battle system is like x-2 and ff12 both of which had a battle system that i liked but they took the flaws from them and stuck them together and said “fuck it, since the main character is a women there we be a sequel i think we will call it….uhhh…..ff13-2 how that sound square enix?” “brilliant! could’nt have thought there would ever be a second one!” says square enix.
    since b4 the merger squaresoft has had great games chrono games, mario rpg, mana games, final fantasys, and kingdom hearts. enix games the only one that didnt piss me off was mischief makers and star ocean. since the merger the games not so great. ff-crystal chronicles game was strange and kinda hard to play and strange again;
    ff dirge was a great game nough said;
    ff-tactics and war of the lions was just like ogre battle which was a pretty damn good game (and the worst game i have ever played was dynasty tactis i was so pissed i though my system and tv out the window and was even more angry when the made a second one)
     crisis core was a pretty good follow up and made ff7 easier to understand;
    dissidia was the fighting game that was not a fighting game and was alot better than erhgiez but don’t get me wrong erhgiez was a good fighting that i can play because i don’t hate the characters (damn you bartz);
    kingdom hearts one was pretty good and 2 but chain of memories got me confused and the backstory on roxas dont really care yes if you take x out and rearraing the letters it spells sora great good for him it is his nobody.then birth by sleep just answered a few questions and added more questions and 358/2 was and should have been the end of roxas but no, what should be done is fill in how the organization xiii started and all the back info on all the characters i know they discuss it not follow them in birth by sleep like the game should start by the leader going and recuiting the members and then lead up to birth,then 358/2,then chain,then kh2.
    ff13 versus looks like a badass game but he looks too badass can’t wait to play it.;
    duodecim was a good followup and had a great feature to transfer the data from the original one i didnt think it had it so thats why i didnt buy it immediately cuz i spent 167 hours one the original i hate having to start over;
    but if they were to remake the ff7 game i think it would be worth it for other that my generation and older to play one of the only games to make me cry cuz he had his love and lost it forever unlike ff8 you never get closer than losing them in space forever ff9 the final fight is and always will be the strangest thing to ever happen to me in a game ffx when tidus(tye-dus) and yuna kissed in the macalania woods and when tidus went through yuna i cried but x-2 ruined that when they found him again ff6 terra was the main character no love intrest only celes and locke(mog and yeti???) ff4 which ends up spawning ff4 cecils son i forgot who he is ff3 not that i remember ff2 mabe game got really hard then got amazingly easy so i sped through the  game and didnt pay attention to the story the only part i vividly remember is when minwu used his green kamehameha and died ff1 nah nope no love interest unless you get a whole team of fighters o.O
    but 14 years of the original game lieing in the corner while these newer games a building pillars of the game but the game is not on them. i know it takes a long time to make a game to remake a game that took me 50 hours to beat the game nowadays it takes up to 150 hours at least to beat a rpg but what the director said about the things that would be a problem cross dressing nope not a problem just change the look of the items that he can wear like the sexy dress and the plain dress problem solved and the wig same thing then about aeries death in my personal opinion i think that it would be more enteraining and as for the graphics use the ones from the technical demo there is no need to use graphics that make the game look like skyrim. the director need to quit being a baby and just give the fans what they want it is not like they truly only care about the game money is what game devolpers care most about. if they were  given the option of a free copy of the game or 50,000 dollars he won’t be like ill take the game cuz i want to admire how i made the game better than the original, he just doesn’t want to be the  guy to fuck with a classic game and people never want to go back and play the original but, statistically anything that ever gets remade people want to see, play,or read the original. since the have two movies and 14 or more games that have cloud in them and several stories and books about the other characters if he or they were to remake ff7 it would be a financial gain

    Well from a gamer and a fan of final fantasy I can honestly say that FF7 was the best game SquareEnix created, every game since then the series has become worse and worse I dont even bother becoming excited with FF anymore.

    I like many of my friends used to love the FF series but it’s not the same as it once was for instance FF X-2, what the hell where they thinking I hope somebody got fired for that one.

    Each game revolves around crappy storytelling and very bright costumes/world environment. There’s none of the gritty dark underbelly of an evil corporation willing to do anything for a profit and a world in which you could relate (granted without all of the monsters and magic).

    They continue to spawn out sequel after sequel of games that are neither interesting or unique.

    The character storyline, script and development seem to be aimed at the female or homosexual of our species as they’re full of drama and everyone seems as if they are about to cry.

    In summary I now know no-one who plays this PoS, we people who used too only hold out for a FF7 re-make of its own. Yet the good people at SE cant see past the crap they’re making to actually build something that the fans want.

    After FF7 was released we immediately thought a sequel was on the cards, since FF8 we all thought a re-make of FF7 was on the cards. 15 years, 2 consoles and a whole series of mass produced FF PoS games later, still no re-make.

    Go fuck yourself SquareEnix, I will go back and accept it as it is; a better time in your developing history with better ideas, design and direction.

    There is a reason you’re losing money.

    Personally, I would love to see a remake of FFVII. I think that not only will it bring the game to the new generation, but also give it a look of, “hey i am epic! Play me!” Most people go by what the game looks like. People don’t want to have to play a game where the characters are blocks. I would also love to see it because of the voice over. I would love to audition to be the voice of Aerith or Yuffie. But that is just me and wanting to voice act.

    i would still be playing ff7 the combat wasnt over the top it was simple nothing wrong with that , my game had the game breaking glitch with that cutscene froze. but they simple put a graphics upgrade and keep everything the same or make a KH combat. and that was BS all they care about is money they didnt make AC for the fans they did it only for money and yeah there a company but companys do beter when they work to satisfy there fans you know build trust but almost no company or game dev is like that anymore.

    Ok, so I don’t understand the issue about FF7… They are concerned with Voices??? They already have the voice types thanks to Advent children. Another concern is next Gen Graphics, well no shit!!! We want a remake, you don’t do a remake on older graphics and they blew away their time making shitty games, so it will have to be on Next Gen now!! Plus they are remaking all the others, but 7??? And that complaint is “Its not as interesting as you think”? Its only the most bought game ever!!! No wonder the newer games suck, these guys are straight up idiots… Think makes absolutely no sense, either they are lying to get reactions (Like they need too???) or they are the dumbest Devs on the planet, because those answers make no sense…

      Dawg there people don’t want remake because 1 story might get mess up because there some part like cloud cross dressing is not appropriate in next gen.Which they don’t want to take it out. 2 different battle system 3 It take years just like versus 13

    So sick and tired of Lightning. Those idiots are doing everything in their power to ruin the series forever. Yet somehow, the faint glimmer of awesome that still represents FF7 16 years later, keeps me hoping they might make a decent game again someday. Not likely though.

    FF7 is easily one of the best games I have ever played, I recently played it thru and I was amazed at how much I remembered from it and how fun it was to battle Ruby and Emerald weapon. Training and raising Chocobo´s is awesome and if they ever do a remake I would love if they could expand on that especially with the racing and gambling at the golden saucer. There are so many great moments in the game, don’t change a thing I don’t see what the problem is with the cross-dressing part? Its beautifully wired and fun and should be part of the game. Aeris dying is one of the most powerfull moments in video game history if you ask me why would that be an issue?

    It;s been over two years since this discussion and square enix is still going and you still don’t have your ff 7 remake. they aren’t the same company they were when they made the older series of final fantasies. It’s amazing to see how many of the western population will never be satisfied. Square has continuously brought games to the table for all to enjoy even though they see the opinions of you ungrateful people. There is not one game of squares that anything near garbage and each game presented a new opportunity for it’s players to enjoy. If you can’t get into the story oh well, find other games to play with stories that you like but, this doesn’t mean the games weren’t good. Tell me what japanese game created these days does not require grinding? exactly you knew what to expect already. I personally get attached to all character in all fina fantasies I’ve ever played and since im 33 by now that’s pretty much all of them. I will continue to purchase any games square enix makes because they are all unique and very entertaining and much like myself they change with the times. I love the graphics that are being brought out by this company and they have very talented people working to bring me and you all this enjoyment. The past is the past and sometimes it should stay that way. There is no need to bad mouth a company because they do things that you do not like. Especially when that company has given you so much to enjoy. There aren’t many gaming companies in the industry that can boast the accomplishments of Square. The have been in around since “Ninetendo” for what i can remember. I mean the first nintendo console , few companies this day have been around that long and not sold out or busted. Anyway stop complaining because things happen you don’t like, take it for what it is and enjoy what you can of it.

    All FFVII needs is tend to bugginess and redo the translation (offering the original English script as an option), both of which can be done on the since-rereleased PC version (which also now features the PS1 audio).
