“Everything old is new again” is how the mantra goes, but rarely has it been made manifest to the degree that explodingRabbit has taken it. explodingRabbit, my new personal hero, has taken Super Mario Bros., and added dashes of Castlevania, Contra, Mega Man, and Metroid to create what may very well be the greatest flash game to ever grace the world wide web.

His Super Mario Crossover plops Simon Belmont, Bill Rizer, Mega Man, and Samus Aran into the Mushroom Kingdom, so that you may stomp Goombas with your favorite 8-bit NES 2D action star. What’s particularly awesome is how each imported character feels very much like themselves; Bill Rizer (of Contra Fame) has his gun, somersault jumps, and even his spread gun–which cuts through bricks and enemies like hot butter. How do you get the spread, barrier, and other Contra items–by grabbing mushrooms and flowers of course!

That’s the magic of Super Mario Crossover; it near-flawlessly blends the charming Super Mario Bros. environments with non Super Mario Bros. characters to create an incredible remix. I recommend heading to Newgrounds now for a quick play before Nintendo’s lawyers come a-knockin’.
