Emulation geeks unite! We’ve been hearing about the Pandora for quite some time and I almost thought it would’ve ended up in Digital Press with the rest of gaming history, but no: it’s alive! Not only that, but the infection is shipping. Homebrew emulations will most likely start spawning like crazy and will most likely even encourage the modding community to do some extra work. If it’s a huge success it may even start becoming a thorn in the side of some of the bigger players in the gaming industry as emulations pop up coming out of people’s basements.
Sure, Super NES was totally awesome and you don’t only want to play them on flash, but would you be willing to blow $700 on the thing? Now, you may really love your Super Mario Bros or Batman Returns, but we’re in a recession here and $700 seems like quite a lot considering that you can play all those games for free these days. Besides, the controls on the thing look very awkward to handle besides the whole Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle type color scheme going on. However, there looks to be full color to it. In fact, max resolution is 256 x 224 and it’s got a 3.58 MHz processor in there. Not bad I guess, but for the price you can get a device that can do a whole lot more besides play SNES games. And with rumors of the iTablet abound, who knows what apps and emulators may be coming out.
Jeff blogged about the Blip Festival not long ago and I attended it recently for the very first time. For anyone that loves gaming and music, but never really found a way to merge the two perfectly, this will probably be your scene. Coming from the world of professional gaming and being a bassist/guitarist/vocalist for a number of different bands, the world of chiptunes and the Blip Festival is something that I encourage all geeks to experience.
EA Mobile launched Battleship for the iPhone/iPod Touch today. For the geeks in all of us that loved the board game experience with our friends, you’ll be able to download this from the App Store. Players will be able to battle it out with friends via WiFi or Bluetooth. This should make for some discrete and awesome fun in the workplace if you and your co-workers have the devices.
As a hardcore Left4Dead player, it’s totally awesome to hear and see that an 8-bit version of Left4Dead is being created. Being created by Eric Ruth using Pixelforce NES, it will be available in January for zombie hunters as a free download onto their PCs. It features all the campaigns and characters from the original game and you’ll be able to play with more your friends as well as the game allows for more than one player.
Having your wedding invitation themed to an 8-bit game is awesome. Having it confirm that your marriage will result in lots of fighting (as truthfully many do these days) is hysterical. Of course, there is a while sacred institution that is marriage, but this is pretty cool. If you were getting married in something like 2nd Life or World of Warcraft this would also be appropriate.
