Capcom’s reintroduced Third Strike to a new generation of fight fans. Did the fighting game master nail this port? Quite simply, yes. This excellent game brings home our 2D-X Excellence Award.
When a game stars a protagonist named John “Loose” Kannon, you know that there’s going to be a high body count. Gameloft gives gamers exactly that with 9MM, a hardcore, third-person shooter inspired by Max Payne. In it, you guide Mr. Kannon through a series of urban stages dispensing justice one bullet at a time. 9MM, overall, is a solid action romp that delivers an entertaining (albeit very clichéd) gaming experience.
Blendo Game’s Atom Zombie Smasher is an absolute steal. It’s a part of the pay-what-you-will “Humble Indie Bundle,” an independent game collection that’s sold to consumers for charity purposes. With a name like Atom Zombie Smasher, one would expect an either incredibly awesome game, or an absolute piece of trash. I’m happy to report that it ‘s the former. Atom Zombie Smasher is a darkly-comedic strategy game that’s both addictive and rewarding, and one that’s sure to hook RTS junkies.
Michael Bay is not to blame for the atrocity that is Transformers: Dark of the Moon for PS3. No, really.
Don’t think that this iPad port of NBA Jam’s 2010 rebirth is a lesser game. iPad-friendly controls and an updated roster makes this the definitive NBA Jam, despite missing a few console modes. It’s more than worthy of our 2D-X Excellence Award.
The iPhone and iPad platforms have a number of racing titles ranging from the realistic (Real Racing 2) to the insane (RoadBlaster), which bring unique driving experiences all their own. You can add fractiv’s Lane Splitter to that mix. The 99-cent universal iPad game eschews the idea of competitively racing toward a finish line or mowing down opponents. Instead, you must avoid traffic as you speed your way toward your wedding. Yes, your wedding. Our blonde, tuxedo-wearing protagonist is running late and its up to you to break several traffic laws to ensure he promptly gets to his love. And it’s remarkably fun
The horribly named Thor: Bring the Thunder, the promotional tie-in for Marvel’s big screen adaptation of its own Norse god comic, hit the Web this week. The Flash-based 2D game, which is free to play at Marvel’s site, puts you in control of the hammer-toter as you attempt to rescue a kidnapped maiden. The plot and gameplay are bare-bones–it is a Flash game, after all–but the retro music and visuals may prove enticing to those with an affinity for sprite-based video games.
Battleheart is an unique dungeon crawler that has excellent graphics, inventive controls, and stellar gameplay. It’s a 2D-X Excellence Award-winning, must-have iPhone and iPad game.
