Sony’s pre-TGS conference revealed the Vita’s Japanese launch date, price, data plan, corgis, some lovely menu music and many other capabilities. As we said earlier, it is a very sexy piece of tech.

I lament modern AAA games’ over-reliance on guns as a vital gameplay mechanic, but all that pseudo-intellectual critical analysis went out the window when I had the opportunity to test drive Lightbox Interactive’s Starhawk. A third-person shooter slated for release in 2012, Starhawk is the spiritual successor to WarHawk, but with a focus on single player combat. But oh, Starhawk is no ordinary shooter.

How did the Big Three fare this E3? Microsoft played it safe with no big reveals and loads of dull, family-friendly fare. Though to be fair, they have something for everyone, which is also what Nintendo’s aiming for. Sony’s still the core gamer’s best friend with a variety of exclusives and an impressive handheld in the Vita with a competitive price. Too bad AT&T’s their sponsored provider. Nintendo unveiled the first new home console in years with tech bewildering and impressive all at once. Strong first-party and finally strong third-party will most likely ensure their spot in the top. Though announcing a new Smash Bros. with no details or footage was a little cruel.
