Ol’ school sports gamers, Joystiq has the potentially awesome scoop. Our bloggy brethren have obtained knowledge from a reliable source that the greatest football game series of all time is returning in the form of Tecmo Bowl Throwback, which will be  HD remake of Tecmo Super Bowl.  Full team customization, a retro 8-bit mode, and a new soundtrack round out some of the other rumored features.

The biggest question, of course, is whether or not Tecmo Bowl Throwback will feature an official NFL license in order to recreate the late ’80s/early ’90s pigskin experience. With EA playing the role of gatekeeper regarding all things NFL, I won’t hold my breath, but it would certainly give them some cool points if they decided to play nice.
