Part third-person shooter, part brawler, part shmup, The Red Star is one of the most underrated action titles to pop up on the PlayStation 2. Based on the the sci-fi/fantasy graphic novel of the same name by Christian Gossett, it made quite an impression on action fans who appreciated the game’s big guns, large explosions, and insane difficulty. Now XS Games is taking the game mobile with a PSP port.

The Red Star is set in an alternate reality where the United Republics of the Red Star rules with an iron fist. Once a powerful empire, the URRS melts into a dystopian nightmare thanks to the slaughtering of millions of its own people under the orders of their leader, Imbohl, a wicked bastard of a sorcerer that’s respected  as the leader of the Great Revolution. The answer to this evil lives in the Heroes of the Red Star who discover their true calling, abandon their duties as soldiers of the Red Fleet, and embark upon a life changing journey to liberate their people from Imbohl’s sadistic and dark ruling.

The Red Star can currently be purchased from PSN for $14.99. Keep a lookout for the iPhone/iPod touch,/iPad version coming out later this year.
